How to: spring clean your wardrobe

Now that spring has arrived, the annual urge for a wardrobe reset is officially in full swing. We bet you’ve already noticed the pile of mismatched shoes or those half-hung coats, right? Well, those are the unmistakable signs telling you it’s about time for a spring clean.

But let’s be honest, tackling a wardrobe clear-out can be a little overwhelming – we find ourselves asking where to start, what supplies to buy, and most importantly, what to cull. But no worries, here at Homemaker The Valley we’ve got you covered! We’ve compiled the best steps to make the whole process easier. Simply follow our guide below and your wardrobe will be in top shape before you know it.

Step one: categorise
First things first, it’s time to empty your wardrobe and categorise. This means you need to set aside a good chunk of time dedicated to spring cleaning your wardrobe. Take everything out and lay it on your bed or a clean surface. Then, sort your clothes into categories – think tops, bottoms, dresses, outerwear, and accessories. This is going to help you assess the quantity of each category and will make the next step a whole lot easier.

Step two: declutter
Decluttering might just be the most difficult step, but it’s also the most crucial. It’s time to decide what you want to keep and what you want to donate, sell, or discard. If you get stuck, here are some questions to guide you: Does it fit? Have you worn it in the past year? Is it damaged? Does it match your current style?

Step three: donate and sell
Time for more categories! Separate the items you no longer want into two piles – one will be donated and the other will be sold. Clothes in good condition can be donated or given to friends and family. High-quality or barely used items can be sold through a consignment store, online platform, or even a garage sale.

Step four: clean and organise
Now that you’ve narrowed down your wardrobe, let’s clean the space. This is when all your hard work starts to pay off – the end is in sight! Be sure to dust the shelves, wipe down surfaces, and vacuum the floor (simple, but super effective!).

Step five: storage solutions
Your wardrobe should look like an empty canvas, which means it’s time to consider some storage solutions. Look at the space holistically and compare its size to the amount of clothes you need to fit in. If you’re looking to optimise the space, then a trip to Homemaker The Valley is a must. Howards Storage World has a wide range of clothes hangers, drawer dividers, and hanging rails that are ideal for wardrobe organisation.

Tip: if you have limited closet space, consider rotating your wardrobe seasonally. Store out-of-season clothing in vacuum storage bags from Howards Storage World to free up some space.

All that’s left to do now is pop everything back into place and there you have it, the ultimate guide to spring cleaning your wardrobe! Remember, if you make an effort to keep your wardrobe neat and tidy, then the spring clean will get easier and easier every year.

Decluttering Guide: 5 Dos & Don’ts

We’ve all been there; over time our homes build up with clutter, and before we know it, there’s not a spare cupboard or shelf in sight!

Decluttering and re-organising the home can often feel like a daunting or insurmountable task, but it doesn’t have to be. With our helpful decluttering tips, you can feel empowered to transform your space into a clean, clear, and organised haven – now, and into the future. From using Pinterest for inspiration to investing in functional furniture and finding long-term storage solutions, we’ve got you covered. Read our decluttering guide below to get started on your journey to a clutter-free, stylish abode.

DO: Create a Pinterest Board for Inspiration

The First DO in our decluttering guide? Find some inspo! Pinterest is an amazing tool that provides endless inspiration for every aspect of your life, from health and wellbeing to style and fashion to interior design and home organisation. We recommend creating a dedicated board for decluttering and organising your home. Fill it with images that resonate with your style and inspire you to declutter without sacrificing aesthetics. You could even break this down further by creating separate boards for decluttering separate rooms. What is it about the spaces that inspire you? It could be the rattan boxes they use for odds and ends, the blanket box they use for toys, or the way they store their makeup brushes and toiletries. Once you have your ideas, make a list of the storage pieces, breaking the list down into what you need for each room for ease of tackling your decluttering project (we suggest taking on just a single room at a time). Head to Howard’s Storage World to pick up all the items you need. Soon you’ll feel more motivated to organise all the other rooms in your home as well and decluttering will be a breeze – and enjoyable!

DO: Invest in Functional Furniture

One of the most effective ways of decluttering and organising your home when you’re short on storage space (or space in general), is to invest in furniture that’s dual purpose. Storing your linen inside a bed frame with drawers, blankets inside an ottoman, and your favourite magazines and books within your coffee table are all great ways to declutter home areas and overcome a lack of storage space, while ensuring you aren’t giving up on style. Freedom has a fantastic selection of functional furniture that will not only suit any aesthetic, but also get you excited about decluttering and organising your home. This is also a clever way of getting rid of unwanted items too – if you forget you have the toys, linen, knick knacks once stored away, or don’t use them over the next 12 to 18 months, it may be a sign it’s time to sell, donate or bin!

DON’T: Overcrowd Your Countertops

The first DON’T in our decluttering guide: clear those countertops! Your kitchen counter can sometimes become one of the most cluttered areas in the house. This could be for a variety of reasons, but to help declutter your countertops, one of the best things you can do is minimise that which lives on your countertop by giving it a home – and styling everything that needs to stay!

Remove any mail, catalogues, paperwork or other household items out of your kitchen and find areas to house whatever’s left. Create a coffee corner for your coffee machine and mugs or place your utensils in a small utensil holder if your drawers are already full of kitchen necessities. Try to source storage items that match your countertop or kitchen style, while also providing ample space or functionality. If bench space is at a premium, think of ways you might be able to move things elsewhere – opt for paper towel holders that can be attached under cupboards, and coffee pod rails or spice racks on the inside of doors.

House also has an incredible selection of drinkware, glassware and dinnerware to help make your kitchen look super chic.

DO: Implement Long-Term Storage Solutions & Practices

After decluttering your space, focus on sourcing long-term storage solutions and decluttering methods you can implement to maintain or managed your organised home ongoing. This step must always be done last, so you know the exact number of solutions you need and what your home is lacking, and the exact size and space of where you will be storing them. If you love glass jars or containers for your pantry or fridge, we recommend being consistent by sticking to one style of clear jar in varying sizes (rather than accumulating containers of all styles, shapes and sizes – unless that’s your aesthetic).

Baskets in cupboards are a great way to keep like-minded items together to avoid any unnecessary clutter – decide if you prefer baskets with lids, or without, and what style will best suit your space and it’s desired function. You may even want to implement a practice of going through these every 3 to 4 months to see if there’s anything in them you need to throw out.

Howard’s Storage World, Freedom and Provincial Home Living have a great range of storage solutions perfect for decluttering. For more permanent solution, Kitchen Connection can help with kitchen redesign, and storage solution inserts such as corner storage solutions, wireware, rubbish, recycling and clutter solutions and sink accessories. We suggest you scroll through the Aspley Homemaker City website for more decluttering and home organisation tips and tricks before you head to the centre.

DON’T: Chuck Everything Into a Box & Forget About it

Last but not least in our decluttering guide: Don’t feel tempted to just chuck stuff into a box or drawer if that’s not a good home for it. If you don’t have good decluttering practices in place, it can be all too easy to open a door or drawer, shove your clutter in, and hope to never see it again.

Find common-sense homes that will help you remember where things are, and don’t be afraid of the label maker! There’s nothing worse than coming back to something you’re forgotten about in your fridge or pantry and wondering what it is (or used to be), or rifling through unmarked boxes for that international power adaptor the night before an international flight.

5 Living Room Styling Mistakes and How to Avoid Them

When it comes to styling your living room, there are some tips and tricks to implement and mistakes you want to avoid to ensure it looks the way you’d like it to look, while ticking the boxes in terms of functionality and liveability. After all, your living room shouldn’t just be nice to look at; it’s also a space you’ll want to entertain guests, where you can relax and put your feet up, spend precious time with your family and binge-watch your favourite shows.

Creating a comfortable, stylish, and multifunctional living space doesn’t have to be a daunting or expensive task. There are so many simple style tweaks you can make to enhance your living room to not only maximise space, but also make it feel incredibly inviting to absolutely everyone who visits. If you’re looking for some new living room ideas to make it feel more spacious, more functional or more stylish (or a combination of all three), then read on. We share our living room styling mistakes to avoid, styling tips to embrace, and the retailers at Aspley Homemaker City, where you can stock up on everything to bring your living room styling dreams to life.

Living Room Styling Mistake #1: Your living room is cluttered

When it comes to living room styling, storage is key! It can hide a multitude of sins, and makes it tidying up much easier – the more you can put behind closed doors, inside ottomans, underneath a table or on floating shelves, the better. Eureka Furniture has a great selection of coffee tables with ample storage space, so you can store anything from linens to your favourite magazines away, without compromising on style. They also have wall shelves in different shapes and sizes you can add to the wall of your living room to create your own vertical shelving.

Living Room Styling Mistake #2: Your TV is in the Wrong Place

The best way to free up space in your living room is to mount your TV on a wall. When you mount it, you want to make sure that it’s not blocking any precious window light or reflecting any window light. No one wants glare disrupting their TV viewing experience now do they? If you’re not able to mount your TV, you can also place it on top of a sleek entertainment unit that not only has storage options, but also enhances the look and feel of your other living room furniture. Freedom has a massive range of entertainment units available in shades of natural timber that’ll easily elevate your living room without taking up too much space.

Living Room Mistake #3: Your Room is Too Dark

Lightening up the colour palette can make all the difference when it comes to creating a sense of space in your living room. If you’ve got a smaller living room, a styling tip for making it feel bigger is to paint your walls an off-white and keep furniture light-coloured or tonal. If the space feels too clinical for your tastes, you can inject colour and warmth into your space through furniture and decor items. Nick Scali has so many lounge and sofa options available in a variety of colours, so whether you love a dark brown leather look or a pastel palette, you’ll be able to find the perfect centrepiece to enhance your living room styling vision. You can add light or creative cushion colour combinations for added interest, changing up as the seasons and trends change.

Living Room Mistake #4: Your Sofa is Too Big or Too Small

Many people fill their living rooms with furniture that is too large or chunky for the space, especially when it comes to sofas. This, of course, will make your living room look a lot smaller. So when it comes to choosing living room furniture, try to choose sofas that leave 18 inches (or 46 centimetres) of space on either side and don’t occupy the entire length of the wall. If you only have space for a two-seater, trick your brain into thinking you have more space by investing in an ottoman, so you can extend the couch when you need to, and place it elsewhere when you don’t. Provincial Home Living have ottomans to suit every style of sofa, whether you love a colourful velvet fabric or prefer a tonal linen piece.

Living Room Mistake #5: You’re Missing Mirrors

There aren’t many living room styling pieces that can make your space look bigger than it is, whilst also enhancing its overall aesthetic. One home décor piece that can is a sleek mirror. There are so many different mirror styles to choose from that it’s now easier than ever to find one that truly shows off your creative flair, whilst also making your living space feel comfortable and inviting. Of course, you also need to find a minor that balances your space, otherwise it may overpower it. If you’re wanting an oversized mirror for your living room, opt for a small frame as a larger frame can make your living room feel even smaller than it is. If you’re wanting a smaller mirror to place on a wall, find one that can be placed at the average person’s eye level (roughly 154 centimetres from the floor to the centre of the mirror) and leave enough space around the frame for the piece to breathe. We recommend popping into Bed Bath N’ Table and checking out their range of mirrors to see which size would suit your living room best.

Redecorating your home doesn’t have to be an expensive exercise! In today’s blogpost we are sharing all our tips, tricks and exercises for redecorating and transforming your home on a budget. Update Soft Furnishings

Soft furnishings can be one of the simplest ways in your home to make the largest impact. Cushions and throw rugs can be added to the areas of the house we use the most, such as the bedroom and living room; completely transforming a space. If you are looking for one of the best ways to create a brand-new look in your home, without spending a truckload of money then soft furnishings are the key. Stores such as Pillow Talk and Freedom have an amazing range of cushions, blankets, and bed linen at affordable prices. At the moment we are seeing a mixture of warm tones trending, such as mustard, blush pink and beige. We are also huge fans of the ever-popular Coastal or Hamptons design style which can be created by adding an array of neutral cushions with a pop of navy blue or sage green.

Minimise Clutter

One of the simplest and cheapest ways to transform your home on a budget is to declutter and simplify your belongings. You may not initially think that this can create a whole new look for your home, but we guarantee you will be surprised! Simply by removing a few items from cluttered shelves, over-stuffed bookcases, or the top of a chest of drawers can breathe life into a space and create a renewed atmosphere. If you want to take things one step further, we recommend heading into Howard’s Storage World to pick up some beautiful and affordable storage solutions. Try overhauling your pantry with organised containers or adding beautiful storage baskets to rooms such as the living room or the kid’s playroom to sort and hide clutter.

Add Artwork

Artwork is an easy way to redecorate almost every room in the home and can also be done in a budget-friendly way! We have plenty of retailers here at Aspley Homemaker City that stock a wide range of affordable artworks that will suit any home or design style. Our favourite places to add artworks are above the bed, in the dining room, down a hallway or on a blank wall in your living room. Rice Furniture, Freedom, Provincial Home Living. and Pillow Talk have a wide range of prints or canvases at varying prices and sizes. Alternatively, if you’ve already got a beautiful print or art piece you’ve been meaning to get framed, then head into Frame Today! Adding artwork to an otherwise blank wall can completely transform a space. We love utilising artwork to add a pop of colour to a space or if you love the minimalist style, try adding a black and white line drawing in a gorgeous timber frame!

Shop Your Home

Another great, budget-friendly tip we love that makes a huge difference to the overall look of your space is to ‘shop your home’. Shopping your home essentially means that you re-arrange home décor, furniture, and art pieces throughout the home to give them a new lease of life and create a whole new look. We recommend taking all your decorative pieces out of every room and putting them on the kitchen bench, so you can see what you are working with. From there, re-style each area of your home, experimenting with using items in new locations and grouping different pieces together. We also love re-arranging the furniture in a room to create a new floor plan and design. If you don’t have the means or space to re-arrange every item, try swapping out a side table or an occasional chair and see the difference it makes. Dedicate an afternoon on a weekend or a weekday evening and simply have fun with it. We know you will love the result!

Use Greenery & Foliage

An affordable way to redecorate your home and breathe life into a space is by adding greenery, plants, and foliage. Using greenery not only adds texture and life but creates pops of colour throughout your home as well. Try adding some gorgeous large plants such as a fiddle leaf fig or bird of paradise to fill an otherwise empty corner of a room. Place them in beautiful woven baskets from stores such as Provincial Home Living. or Freedom. Both retailers also have an amazing range of faux flowers and foliage at affordable price points. We love places a large bunch of stems and flowers in a gorgeous vase and placing it on an entryway table, the centre of a dining table or the coffee table.

How To Create A Cosy And Inviting Home

Creating a cosy and inviting home not only allows you to feel relaxed and at ease when you arrive home at the end of a busy day but encourages your family, friends and guests to feel the same. There is something about the feeling of walking into someone’s home and immediately feeling a sense of welcome, ease and comfort. Everything from the lighting, scent, soft furnishings and small thoughtful touches make a huge difference. Read on, to find out our top tips and tricks for creating a welcoming and inviting home and where you can pick up a few items to make your house feel like the ultimate cosy sanctuary!

Inject Personality

There is nothing more welcoming than coming home and seeing items that are nostalgic, comforting and reflect your personality. Although display homes are beautiful, they are often missing the added element of personalisation and individuality. There are many ways you can style your home to ensure it is reflective of you and your family’s personality in a tasteful way. We love adding books with beautiful imagery and stories on topics you are interested in to your coffee table, console table or floating shelves. These create great talking points when guests are over too! We also recommend using gallery walls in spaces such as the dining room, hallway or living room to inject personality and bring you joy. These could be a collection of artworks, photographs of your family and friends or any other pieces you desire. We recommend using frames of the same material to create a cohesive and elevated look. Pick up some beautiful frames from stores such as Freedom or Provincial Home Living.

Lighting

Well-considered lighting options can make a huge difference to a well design home as they can completely change the atmosphere of a space. Use lighting to not only offer a variety of options and uses, but to create a feature and focal point of a room. We love adding a beautiful pendant light above the dining table or a collection of two or three over an island bench. Floor lamps and table lamps on side tables allow for more dimmed lighting options in areas such as the living room to create a cosy atmosphere. We love adding dimmers to light switches in the bedroom and main living areas to allow for different moods depending on the activity or time of day. Head into Andrew’s Light Up to see their amazing range of lighting solutions from pendants to task lamps and much more!

Guest Room Touches

If you have a guest room or have friends and family stay over often, it is important to make them feel welcome and create an inviting space for them to feel at ease. Here at Aspley Homemaker City we love making our guests feel like they are on holiday by adding thoughtful touches to their bedroom. We recommend choosing beautiful bed linen that is cosy and soft in bright and welcoming colours. Pillow Talk have an amazing range of new season quilt covers, sheets and throw blankets, so be sure to check them out on your next visit! We love the idea of having a beautiful tray of thoughtful and practical items on the bedside table such as a phone charger, eye mask, hand cream and notepad and pen to ensure they have everything they need and aren’t caught off-guard. You can pick up a beautiful tray from stores such as Freedom, Pillow Talk or Provincial Home Living.

Soft Furnishings

To create the ultimate cosy and welcoming abode it is essential to add soft furnishings to elevate your space. Not only do cushions and throw rugs add a pop of colour and texture, but they allow you and your guests to relax and unwind in a comfortable and inviting space. We recommend using soft textures such as linen or cotton and avoid anything with embellishments. Head into Pillow Talk and Freedom to check out their gorgeous range of cushions and throws! Rugs also fall into the soft furnishings’ category, and we recommend adding them to rooms such as the living room, dining room and bedroom. Rugs help to ground the space and create zones whilst also bringing warmth and comfort under foot. We have a number of retailers here at Aspley Homemaker City such as Deco Rug and Provincial Home Living that offer a wide variety of rugs in different textures, shapes, sizes and colours, so head in for a browse today!

Scent

Scent is one of the most important attributes when creating a cosy and inviting home but can often be forgotten. Scent has the ability to completely transform a space and allows you to create a different vibe depending on the season, time of day or event you are hosting. We love using diffusers, candles or room sprays and adding them to all common areas such as the kitchen, living room and bathrooms. Opt for a fresh scent during the Summer months such as coconut and lime or fresh linen and create a cosy vibe during the Winter months by adding the scent of caramel, sage of woody notes to your home. Stores such as Rice Furniture, Freedom and The Sheridan Outlet stock a beautiful range of scents for every mood you wish to evoke.

Practical Tips to Style Your Home Inside and Out

The first question so many of us face when it comes to styling our homes is: where to start?

Some of us think we need to get builders or professionals in to do a renovation. Or we need an interior decorator to give us all the inside tips. That couldn’t be further from the truth.

Styling your home might mean changing the décor and furniture and adding some personal touches that weren’t there before. If you aren’t happy with the way your home looks, it may be down to that different rooms are styled in different ways which brings everything out of balance. Styling not only creates a more harmonious look, but it can bring out your personality – which is part of how we’d like our homes to look.

Adding style and beauty to your home should not cost the earth. You can start small and work your way up – and it doesn’t have to cost five figures or more.

Our guide is practical, and you can start with what you have on hand – or what’s in store at Aspley Homemaker Centre.

Easy Styling Tips

Display things in threes

Three is the magic number – when decorating with accessories, be careful not to overload the space. Group accessories with similar themes and varying heights to create beautiful displays and choose quality over quantity! A trio of items on a table or in a corner brings balance to a room. The items don’t need to be uniform either; try different heights or widths, textures and materials, and eclectic objects.

Layering on rugs and sheets

This is often used by professional home stylists to create depth and a more “lived in” atmosphere. You may even notice it when you’re at a swanky hotel next. Layering a colourful or snazzy rug on top of a neutral or earth-toned carpet enhances the look of a bedroom, living room, or dining area.

Flowers light up your home

Flowers instantly bring a fresh feeling to your home. Adding vases of fresh flowers in corners or on benchtops – out of the way of your usual food prep or vanities of course – can bring warmth and vibrance to your home in virtually every room. It’s an effortless look and can put visitors more at ease. For a more cost-effective option, you can use fresh or dried flowers to get the same effect.

Dust regularly

Nothing kills style than a fine layer of dust. This tip is free – just grab a duster or vacuum cleaner and make sure your nooks and crannies are free of dust and lint. Don’t just leave it to your regular cleaning regimen – make sure you do a light dusting every few days or so, just in case guests decide to breeze in unannounced.

Styling Your Bedroom

Cushions and soft furnishings

Adding cushions and soft furnishings to your bedroom – such as ottomans, poufs, or small armchairs – are excellent pieces for bringing texture to your bedroom and a unified finished look.

Stand-alone racks

Keeping clothes in wardrobes or chests of drawers are outdated – high-street boutiques now use “open racks” that are considered decorative furniture. Add a standalone rack to give your bedroom a burst of colour and have your most-worn clothes right within reach.

Not just for sleeping in

Though the English word for “the room we sleep in” is “bedroom” (the German word is “Schlafzimmer”, literally, “sleeping room”) we often make it pull double duties as a relaxation haven or even an office. Zoning your bedroom with a reading nook replete with comfy chair next to a window, or a standing office space on top of a chest of drawers helps you concentrate on the only thing you should be doing in bed – sleeping. It’s also compartmentalised and helps reduce clutter.

Fairy lights and eclectic lamps

There are so many options when it comes to lighting a room these days, having one light in the ceiling seems so last century. Fairy lights, LED strips, and metallic lamps that you can hang over the bedhead are not only bold statements but popular ones too. Internet connected lamps and LEDs can set lighting according to your mood and help wake you up by gradually raising the illumination. RGB (multi-colour) lights can even add ambiance for music, reading, or relaxing.

Adding Style To The Living Room

Use your coffee table as a centrepiece

Having a bold coffee table as something that ties the room together is a great idea to style your living area. Have candles, books, flowers, photos – anything that shows off your personality. Place décor on a flat plate or bowl to create texture and as an easy way to clear the table when you’re entertaining. Have the coffee table atop your rugs and carpets for even more of a pop.

Seating is styling

Even if you live alone, having more seats than necessary in your living room is a fantastic element of style. Using colourful or patterned cushions of all shapes and sizes are an effortless way to create a homely space – and useful for those long nights of binge-watching Netflix.

Use lamps, not the main lights

Floor lamps and table lamps can express your style even further and create subtle lighting instead of using your main lights for everything. The more lamps you have, the more options open up for lighting of your choosing. With new Wi-Fi connected LED lights, you can dim or brighten the room to your liking – or even create swirling colours that suit your mood.

Art, prints, and colour

Hanging artwork or prints of your favourite photos can really enhance the look of your living room and can complement the textured look. Bare looking walls look boring – use the space to bring out your personality and make it yours.

Adding depth with hanging shelves

Along with art and prints, you can add depth with hanging shelves affixed to the wall that are both decorative and practical. Add pot plants, trinkets, or framed photos on there for a stylish look, or use it to house books, music, or movies (or memorabilia from those three, if you’re physical media free.)

Remember scale

Keep everything proportionate in terms of scale. For example, use a low coffee table, half-height couches or seats, and a tall floor lamp. If you’re going for plants, make sure they’re medium-sized and don’t crowd anything out. Consider adding a decorative lampshade or pendant light to bring things together – even if you aren’t using the lights for illumination.

Bathroom and Kitchen Ideas

Uniform soap bottles and dishes

If you use liquid soap or hand sanitiser, ditch the store bottle, and store it in one of your own. Purchasing a special purpose soap bottle or dispenser is a small touch, but it can feed into your larger colour scheme and style. A sleek monochrome bottle might suit a modern design; something with patterns or rustic touches lend itself to a more organic design. Use these bottles for shampoo, washing up liquid, and anything that you use to clean with. It also saves on plastic waste since you only need to buy refills.

Candles and artwork

You can add a bit of luxury to your bathroom by adding some simple artwork in a frame or a few candles around the bath. All give your bathroom a high class feel – even if you aren’t big on taking long baths.

Adding green

Indoor plants like Fiddle Leaf Figs or succulents are understated greenery that can add life to any room but look great in bathrooms or kitchens without being too showy or hard to maintain. Fiddle Leaf Figs are ideal as they’re slow-growing and can be trained to grow in braids and standards. Make sure it’s in the corner or out of the way and gets some light from time to time. Succulents can be kept in candleholders or old glass water bottles under a wall niche or next to your soaps and hand creams on a vanity shelf.

Add textures

Much like in the living room, you can add textures with fluffy bathmats, high thread count towels, and plant pots with ribbed or stone finishes. It can really stand out in rooms that are usually flat and lifeless by nature.

Outdoor and Balcony

Whether you have a backyard or a balcony, you can follow some easy tips to make entertaining look and feel like an extension of your home.

Extend the indoors to outside

Just like the colours and textures of your home, you should extend the indoors outside. If you are using neutral tones in your lounge, use them outside. Remember this when buying accessories and seating for your entertainment focal point. Just remember to remember the scale of your space and style accordingly. Eating up all the space with a massive table on a smaller balcony can make you and your guests feel cramped, for example.

Outdoor furniture

Eating al fresco is becoming popular for people with decks and balconies and you should consider having a complete dining suite to match. Outdoor-centered tables and chairs are great for entertaining, serving as a place for all your snacks and drinks during stand-up parties, and even the main event for an outdoor dinner party. If you’re more into relaxing than entertaining, a comfortable lounge chair or two might be the perfect fit.

Create a sense of ambiance

Drinks and nibbles long into the evening are a staple in Australia and setting a mood with fairy lights or string lights help bring a subtle yet cosy mood to any outdoor event. You can also use lanterns on tables or around your deck or entertainment area. Using citronella can also help with keeping the mozzies away.

Accessorise, accessorise, accessorise

If you want to have your outdoor entertainment area good for all seasons, consider adding accessories such as standing heaters or fire pits. Bringing the greenery to your seating or deck is also a popular option, with free standing potted plants blurring the line between outside and inside even more.

Decorative screening

If your balcony or your backyard backs onto a garage or other kind of wall, you can add some personality and colour with decorative screening. Bamboo, wooden slats, steel – there’s something to match your tastes and make exposed brick or render become more alive. Try adding a mirror to your balcony or courtyard which can instantly lend your area the illusion of space.

Ask yourself questions including, Will we be eating and drinking a lot outside? Are pets going to be roaming the area? Does this have to be a kid-friendly space? Is this space protected from rain? How many people will need to fit comfortably in the space?

Decide on the main upgrades to the space

Once the purpose of your outdoor space is identified it is easy to understand what you will need to enhance the atmosphere of the area. A must for a social outdoor space is of course a Barbeque – how can a family/friends outdoor get together be complete without one? It can’t! You can get your perfect barbeque from Barbeques Galore.

Furniture is an important element of an outdoor space, it can make or break the comfort of being outside. The Furniture Shack in Aspley has a sale on right now on a whole range of their outdoor furniture. Out On The Patio can also assist in finding the best outdoor furniture for your friends and family to enjoy.

Of course you will need to make sure you have a trendy place for afternoon drinks! Rice Furniture in Aspley has bar tables and bar stools that will make your home the number one preference to go to. Also, if you are looking for other brands, our Furniture Stores in Nunawading is hosting the Good Guys Nunawading and the Adairs Nunawading, and it would be awesome for you that will spend some time in this city.

Create a stylish home office

Declutter

Clear your workspace from piles of random papers and folders, books you are not using and other clutter that has made its way into your office. If you have not or will not use the item in 3 months, put it away.

Get organised

There will no doubt be folders or books you will need at hand. Use magazine file holders or stylish boxes to neatly store them. Open rattan baskets available from PillowTalk also look great.

Light it up

Add a table lamp to your workspace. It will lift the mood and with the great range of lamps available from Andrews Light Up, you’ll be sure to find one that can become a feature.

Extra seating

If you have space why not add an occasional chair and create a reading nook. Perfect for off-screen work, you can position the chair to maximise natural light. Why not talk it up a notch and invest in a Lazy-Boy from Recline Furniture.

Add more colour

Using an accent colour against a neutral palette can make the room ‘pop’. Denim blues and lush greens are the colours forecast for the year ahead.

Style it

Your bookshelf has so much styling potential. Work it right. While there are no hard and fast styling rules, some great tips are to stack books horizontally and vertically, add a collection of objects, layer objects and incorporate some artwork.

A breath of fresh air: Our favourite indoor plants

If you are looking for that single, secret ingredient that has the ability to make just about any room look better, it’s a plant. The humble house plant is well and truly back on trend, and for good reason. A splash of healthy greenery instantly lifts a space to make a room feel fresh and welcoming.

If you feel like one of your rooms is lacking a little something, try adding one of our favourite plants for the home and if you feel that you don’t want the responsibility of care for it opt for a fake plant from Pillow Talk or Rice Furniture in Aspley!

Devils Ivy

Also known as golden pothos, fights nasty toxins like xylene, benzene, formaldehyde and trichloroethylene. Just be sure to keep this plant out of reach of your cat or dog as it’s toxic to pets.

Boston Fern

Ferns can typically be quite tricky to care for but the Boston fern is the most tolerant of the bunch. They prefer moist soil, indirect sunlight and humid conditions, so they’re an ideal plant for the bathroom. Not only do they provide a lush green display, they filter out the irritating chemicals, Xylene and formaldehyde.

Chinese Evergreen

This easy-to-care-for plant can survive in most conditions, even with low light and little water. It helps filter out a variety of air pollutants and begins to remove more toxins as time and exposure continues.

Weeping Fig

Often referred to as Ficus (like most plants in the fig family), Weeping fig’s love the light and don’t like being moved so it’s best to find a nice sunny spot in your home for it to stay and only re-pot when necessary.

Peace Lily

This popular indoor plant survives with very little sunlight and only needs watering about once a week, depending on the weather. Peace lilies cleanse your home of pollutants like acetone – a carcinogen commonly found in nail polish and paint. Keep this one away from your fury friends also.

Flamingo Lily

Native to the tropics, this exotic flowering plant prefers a warm and shady environment and daily misting helps to prolong its flowers. They are known to be effective in removing formaldehyde, xylene, toluene, and ammonia from the air.
